As a result of voter approval of San Mateo County’s Measure A, the sales and use tax paid on the purchase of goods and services in San Mateo County will be increased by one-half cent for 10 years.
With the exception of the cities of San Mateo and Half Moon Bay, the sales and use tax will rise from 8.5 percent to 9 percent throughout the county. The sales and use tax will be 9.25 percent in San Mateo and 9.5 percent in Half Moon Bay due to previously passed voter initiatives in those cities.
The new sales and use tax rates will be effective April 1, 2013.
Elsewhere in the Bay Area, voters in Marin and Santa Clara counties have also approved similar sales and use tax increases which will also be effective April 1.
